Construction does not stop in monsoon, but cement handling requires extra care. Learn how to store cement, pour concrete, and cure properly during the rainy season.

Monsoon Construction — Protecting Your Cement and Concrete

India's monsoon season (June-September) brings challenges for construction, but work does not need to stop entirely. With proper precautions, you can maintain quality even during heavy rains.

Cement Storage During Monsoon

  • Store cement in a completely enclosed, waterproof structure
  • Elevate bags on wooden pallets at least 8 inches above ground
  • Cover with multiple layers of waterproof tarpaulin
  • Keep silica gel packets or moisture absorbers in storage area
  • Order smaller quantities more frequently to reduce storage time

Concrete Pouring in Rain

  • Never pour concrete during active rainfall
  • Check weather forecast and plan pours for dry windows
  • If rain starts during pouring, cover immediately with plastic sheets
  • Use waterproofing admixtures in the concrete mix
  • Reduce water-cement ratio slightly to compensate for ambient moisture

Curing in Monsoon

  • Natural rain can actually help curing if controlled
  • Protect fresh concrete from heavy downpours that can erode the surface
  • Maintain wet curing for full 28 days — monsoon humidity helps
  • Avoid walking on fresh concrete for at least 24 hours

PPC Advantage in Monsoon

PPC cement is more suitable for monsoon construction as it generates less heat and has better resistance to moisture compared to OPC. The fly ash content improves workability in humid conditions.
